Safe sleeping bags for babies and young kids

I slept my first baby in a snowsuit, but I was always nervous about the hood and if she was actually safe sleeping in it. With my second kid, I found there is an “approved for baby sleeping” sleeping bag. I bought it and took it on my first camping trip of the season for my son. I got the 20 degree bag because in the Northern Sierras, even our summer months can have below 40 degree nights. My daughter was asleep on my right, and my son was asleep on my left. The low for the night had dropped from 43°F to 38°F, and I was nervous about if my son would be warm enough. I almost bailed and drove the 20 minutes home, but instead, I trusted myself and the gear I bought and went for it. He also wore a wool layer and fleece pjs. I checked his cheeks a few times at night to make sure he was doing well. I didn’t unzip the bag to check because I didn’t want him to lose warmth. In the morning when he woke up, the first thing I did was unzip his sleeping bag at his feet to check if he was good. I put my hand in and instantly felt the warm air surrounding his body. I was so relieved and knew this bag was the right decision.

They make two different ratings 20°F and 40°F. The 20°F does not have openings for hands, so if you have a thumb sucker, this may be a determining factor for you. They have four sizes of bags ranging from 6 months old to adult.
